Outfit post: street meets glamour

My favourite part about styling is mixing different elements and putting them under the same umbrella. Although it's probably been seen several times already, I love mixing street with glamour. Why can't we be cute/sexy but at the same time throw in leather and studs at the same time?

When people buy dresses for special occasions such as grad photos or weddings, they don't know what to do with the dress anymore after that big day. I don't believe it's true. Just accessorize it right, and who cares if you're wearing a glamorous dress for a date. Tone it down with a leather jacket, or knee high socks to create a more modest look. It's all about how you put it together and make it your own personal style (:

Outfit post

It's almost spring time and I can't believe it's snowing here in Vancouver! It only started to melt away today, and apparently it'll be back again next week... Honestly, I haven't been wanting to dress up, and just snuggled up refusing to get out of bed the last week too.

Today, Mr. Sun decided to show up, so I thought I'd put together a few outfits together for you!

__________

Outfit #1

I love my leather jacket, I'll seriously put it on with anything that allows me to wear it with haha.
This was just a casual outfit I put together for a simple dinner + movie date. I always love wearing long socks with any skirts above the knee. It kind of gives this more innocent feel, plus is much more Vancouver weather appropriate as well.

Jacket: H&M
White top: Top Shop
Leather skirt: Zara
Heels: Guess

__________

Outfit #2

This outfit is a little bit more dressy, and probably isn't suitable for an every day look, unless you really like to stand out from the crowd, then why not! I'm not stopping you~
I actually put this look together for a photoshoot I'll be styling tomorrow, stay tuned for the official pictures. Hopefully I'll receive them in 2-3 days.

My top is actually a vintage corset I got at a thrift store in downtown Vancouver called Used. I don't usually go thrift shopping, but I just couldn't resist when I saw how beautiful it was and for such a low price too!
The skirt was purchased from Taiwan, I honestly don't even remember what brand it was. There are just so many random brands there I can't even keep track.
Usually with an outfit that's really out there, I like to accessorize lightly, a watch, maybe a bracelet and a light necklace to fill in all the spots, but not too much so it takes the attention away from the outfit.

__________

Outfit #3

Who says you can't be fashionable with a plain white tee. I honestly love wearing them because they're so comfortable yet it's like a blank canvas that you can use to style with anything without having to worry about over-accessorizing.

Plaid top: TNA
White tee: Club Monaco
Black skinny jeans: Levis
Scarf: Off brand

Excuse my super messy room.. and also my dog who loves to be in most of my shots. She just loves following me everywhere haha.

Thank you for reading, and have a happy sunny weekend!

Outfit post + Dinner at Cin Cin

Happy Family Day everyone!

I hope you all had a nice day off whether it was by yourself, with your family or with your loved ones. I celebrated with my boyfriend at a really nice restaurant on Robson in downtown Vancouver called Cin Cin. There was always good comments and good feedback on the place, but I never got the opportunity to go there until today. The service and food was definitely as good as what I had heard about previously. It's a place I would definitely go back to and recommend for you guys as well. Here are a few pictures of what we had for appetizers as well as our two entrees. Enjoy~

_________________________________________________________________________________

Outfit post:

Alright so asides from all the good food, of course I had to dress up for it as well. Honestly, I had forgotten that we were going to such a fancy restaurant, and just totally dressed casually until later in the evening when we were heading to Cin Cin that I realized I was probably a little underdressed. But not to worry, the place is surprisingly quite casual despite the fancy name.

Here is what I wore:

Leather Jacket: H&M
Off shoulder oversized tee: Zara
Leather/cotton pants: Alice + Olivia

_________________________________________________________________________________

For makeup, there's honestly nothing that I love more than a bold liner and red lips. It suits any occasion, such a simple look but so feminine, and accentuates the best features on your face, the eyes and lips.
Do you also notice my skin looks super flawless and airbrushed too? (Didn't use any photoshop by the way). I'm using Shu Uemura's new lightbulb foundation, which my review will be up soon!
So stay tuned~

Here is what I had on my face:

Brows: Anastasia brow wiz and brow gel both in Brunette
Face: Shu Uemura lightbulb foundation + Illamasqua foundation powder
Eyes: Nars black eyeliner + Cle De Peau volumizing mascara
Lips: Stila liquid lipstick in beso
Cheeks: Nars laguna bronzer + Nars blush in orgasm

I hope you enjoyed this simple night out look! Comment if you have questions~
Have a good rest of the week! Thank you for reading

Beauty Education: Parabens

Starting from parabens in hair products, the brazillian blowout, to cosmetics and skincare you apply onto your face. I've always wondered if having parabens in those products is really as bad as what we always hear about them.

Well I'm not writing this entry to say that parabens are a wonderful thing, and that we should support having it in our skincare, I'm just the type of person that is a little bit more open minded about these things, maybe especially when it's about cosmetics. Maybe consumers should step back and do a little bit of research on the link between cancer and parabens before they limit themselves from many great products, let alone freak out when they hear that this moisturizer they're holding has parabens in it. Because the truth is, there are parabens that are naturally produced in some fruits and vegetables, but nobody seems to know that, and you don't really see that information floating around in magazines and on the news...

I'm here to clear up some questions that you might have regarding both the benefits as well as the negatives that parabens could potentially have on our health.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Commonly asked questions

1. What exactly are parabens?

It is a preservative that has replaced formaldehyde (a carcinogen), that is easily accessible and low in cost. Not only does it preserve your products for a longer period of time, it helps skincare seal in their moisture and keeps it fresh. This is why they are not only found in moisturizers but also products such as toothpaste, self tanners, lubricants and makeup. The cosmetic items I just listed are generally kept in your washroom, which means it is in an environment where the temperature is constantly changing from a high to low and high again. Having parabens in the products will prevent them from moulding and going bad.

2. Why is it a bad thing?

Parabens mimic estrogen produced in women's bodies, which is a cause to breast cancer at high amounts. Though after looking into many articles online, there were no direct links between parabens and cancer, only that parabens are more easily identified among cancer cells.

3. Are there any incentives/alternatives to parabens?

Yes there are: grapefruit seed extract, rosemary, lavender oil and more. These are just the familiar names that we hear more often.

4. What fruits or vegetables naturally produce parabens, and why?

The best example to of a fruit that naturally produces parabens is an apple. If you take an apple and cut it in half, it turns brown. Why do you think it doesn't turn brown before you slice open the fruit? It's actually because there is a layer of paraben outside of the apple that preserves and prevents the inside from going bad and turning brown. The list goes on such as blueberries, strawberries, barley, current, vanilla, carrots and onions. Not only do they act as preservatives, they act as antibacterial agents as well.

5. Why do some brands that claim to be paraben free still have parabens listed in the ingredients?

Firstly, I'd like to tell you that the company are generally not trying to lie to you and get you to purchase by using the phrase "paraben free" as a selling point. Because as I mentioned above, there are many fruits and vegetables that naturally produce paraben. In your skincare, they are not going to mention the fruit clearly as "strawberry," and will list out their chemical names. Which is why you generally won't recognize a lot of the ingredient name unless you ask your best friend Google.
Two brands that I know of that does this is Amore Pacific and Fresh.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Being able to listen to some other opinions on parabens, I realized that as long as you're somebody who is living a healthy lifestyle, eating clean and exercising regularly, something as little as parabens in your skincare that can't even go past the epidermis of the skin, shouldn't really affect you at all.

Even by the end of this article, if you still refuse to purchase products that contain parabens, at least now you will have a valid argument of why you want paraben free products.
I hope this information is helpful to everyone, and I'd love to know what your thoughts are on parabens as well!

Please comment below to let me know, and thank you for reading!!

Sunscreen in Canada

Having worked in cosmetics retail over quite a while now, the most common question I always get is why SPF is never written on a bottle even though there is sunscreen in it? Or why doesn't Canada carry certain products that contain SPF? Well, read on to find out (:

People are starting to become more educated on skincare and ingredients that are in them, such as parabens, and especially sunscreen. There is now more awareness that having SPF in your moisturizer, primer, or just having a regular sunscreen is very important to somebody's daily skincare routine. Whether you are an outdoor person or not, even if your job requires sitting in your office, believe it or not, that SPF 15 will still help to protect you against all the cancer causing light.

So why is it that Canada has so little products that actually have SPF in it, or maybe they do, but it's just not labelled on the container? This has always resulted in confused customers as well as sales associates. The reason is because in order for the brand to have the label of SPF on the box, the company must first register with Health Canada. In some cases, they just decide to leave the label out, and some just to not carry the products with sunscreen at all. Next time, to save yourself some time, just flip the box around and look at the ingredients to see if they have Iron Oxide or Titanium Dioxide listed, they are usually the last few ingredients. These are the two chemical ingredients for sunscreen that is most commonly used in cosmetics.

If you look at the Health Canada's website, over 500 restricted ingredients, or only a low percentage of the ingredient is allowed in cosmetics before it has to be prescribed by doctors. While in the U.S, they only have a handful of restricted ingredients, which means they have access to much more SKU numbers in retailers.

You can see the list if you visit the Health Canada Website. There will be an updated list of ingredients that you won't find in cosmetics that is retailed in Canada.

Next time you walk into a retailer, and they don't have cosmetics that have ingredients or a certain percentage of an ingredient you were looking for, it's not because the store hates you or because they suck, it's simply because Canada's strict regulations has prohibited these ingredients from crossing the border.

Now asides from the general use of titanium dioxide being used for sun protection, many products such as nail polishes, and other pigments use SPF to increase the opacity of the colours. It increases the whiteness of the cosmetic, which is why when you put on sunscreen or a moisturizer with SPF, you can see a slight white tint. So next time when you see something as odd as your eyeshadow or nail polish have sunscreen, you now know the purpose.

I guess in a way, it is a good thing that Canada is looking after Canadians and keeping out as much chemicals as they possibly can. After all, even though us cosmetic junkies do love all those products, we can't help to admit that when you flip a box around to read the ingredients, you only see a long list of unidentifiable chemical words you have never heard of.

Thank you for reading, and have a good day everyone!
Let me know what you think (:

Current skincare routine

The last few weeks/month or so was super stressful and busy for me, hence the huge gap in between each post. I was nearing my graduation, which meant final exams and projects. It just also happened to be in the month of November/December when everyone is going full speed planning from Christmas, which means crazy shifts at work as well.

I meant to do this post a long time ago, regarding my skincare routine, my completely revised routine that helped improve my skin by 100 times. In my earlier posts, I posted about an Algenist regime that I had been going through, that had helped tone down the inflammation of my acne, but not completely take it away. But recently, I switched to two skincare brands: Cle De Peau and Revive.

Cle De Peau is a high end Japanese brand owned by Shiseido. The reason why many have not heard of it, is because it is still a very exclusive and luxurious brand, and in all of British Columbia, you can only find it in one location, which is Holt Renfrew.
Revive is another high end American skincare brand under the same company as Laura Mercier. This brand focuses on science in skincare that helps to retexturize and hydrate the skin.

So with that little introduction done, lets get down to my routine!

1. Cleanse (Using Cle De Peau Refreshing Cleansing Foam)

If you ever do your research for Cle De Peau skincare, you'll realize that most of the products are split into Gentle and Refreshing. Gentle is good for those that are more dry/combination skin, and Refreshing is suitable for those that are acne proned/oily/combination skin.
This cleansing foam is probably the best and current only cleanser I've used that will do it's job without drying out the skin. Usually, a cleanser's job is to get rid of impurities on the skin, which means excess oils and dirts that are leftover on the surface of your skin. This also means it will strip and take away some of the oil that we need to retain our skin's natural moisture.

2. Tone (Cle De Peau Gentle Balancing Lotion)

Using the Cle De Peau cotton pads (click to see why you should apply toners/emulsions using cotton pads instead of your hands), I apply the balancing lotion starting from my t-zone and working my way out. The purpose of the toner is to bring the Ph of your skin to balance. So whether you have more dry or oily skin, it is going to bring it to a regular skin type. This well help prep your skin, so that you can feel the rest of your skincare that go over feel more deeply penetrated into the skin.

3. Serum (Cle De Peau Brightening Serum)

Serums are a little bit like your moisturizer's side kick. It will help you fix problems quicker, allowing deeper penetration because of the consistency of the product compared to a thicker cream. It could either be for blemishes, anti-aging, brightening, dullness, environmental damages, pores, oil control, hydration, evening out skin tone, etc.
For me, I needed my serum to help me hydrate as well as brighten (to help get rid of the pigmentation and acne scars that had formed after my acne had healed, but unfortunately not the scars). Cle De Peau's brightening serum does not use vitamin C or any glycolic acid that causes skin to be sensitive to sun damage, therefore it can be used for both day and night.

4. Condition during the day (Cle De Peau Refreshing Nourishing Emulsion)

In the day time, we want to hydrate and prep your skin for makeup application to go on smoother. This also means we want a moisturizer that isn't oily, and will allow your foundation to hold onto your skin. We don't want it to just sit on top of the skin where the foundation will easily move out of place. This is why I like using Cle De Peau's light emulsion. I use this both during day and night. During the day I use it alone with my toner and serum, and during the night, I layer another night cream on top for extra hydration.

5. Moisturize during the night (Revive ultra retexturing hydrator)

This product was literally the miracle cream, that in my opinion made the most impact on the improvement of my skin. The main ingredient being glycolic acid, it completely helps to retuxturize your skin and deeply hydrate so your skin feels rejuvenated and radiant. The glycolic acid also helps get rid and prevent future acne as well as help to smooth out the texture of the skin.
For some people with extra sensitive skin, you may feel a little bit of a tingle, but not to worry, it is just the ingredient settling into your skin. But remember, glycolic acid, although works wonders, it does make your skin more sensitive to sun damage, so be aware that you are only using this during the night time. And do not forget your sunscreen!

6. Protect with SPF (Estee Lauder sunscreen SPF 50)

If your primer/foundation/tinted moisturizer does not include an SPF, please make sure you are wearing sunscreen especially if you are using treatments that help with pigmentation/help to lighten your skin. Even if you're just going out to the office, or are going to be at a friend's day all day, they build up of the little times your skin is in contact with the sun will make a huge impact on how fast your skin ages when you reach a certain age. So if we can start preventing, why not start asap! And it's just a simple step of applying your sunscreen.

Weekly treatments (in no particular order):

1. Cle De Peau Massage Cream

I didn't start using this until about 95% of my acne was cleared. This product does many things:

a. hydrates
b. firms (tightens the skin)
c. helps to increase blood circulation)

For me, I needed it to hydrate and to help with blood circulation. The reason why, is because any darkness in your skin is caused by something called melanin that comes to the surface of your skin. Massaging the skin will help to break apart the melanin, making it easier for my serum to brighten up those dark spots.

2. Cle De Peau deep cleansing oil

You've probably heard this a million times already, but beautiful makeup means firstly having beautiful skin. If you don't exfoliate, or get rid of that gross layer of dead skin trapped on the surface of your skin, you can't expect your foundation to go on smoothly, no matter how expensive or hydration the formula is.

_________________________________________________________________________________

My final advice here for those acne proned people is to be consistent with your routine. Be patient, and most importantly, don't lose hope in your skincare! The worst thing you can do to yourself is consistently be changing your routine because you feel like it isn't doing anything. But acne is a difficult thing to treat, and skincare and medication both take time to have affect. It took me a whole year to find my routine and clear my skin. For others, it may have taken longer. I know it is depressing watching a new pimple grow every day, but it'll get better I promise!

I hope this picture will motivate you to stay confident and believe that it will get better!

Makeup post: Fall trends

With the Fall season just hitting, it's time to dress warm, and change up our makeup colours!
If you haven't already, let's take out the warm colours, browns, blacks, and you know, the new black of this year, ORANGE!

Yeah that's right, orange is the new black of the year, so besides the brown eye shadows and red lips, don't be afraid to pull out that orange eyeshadow (which I have done below), and orangey red lipstick.
What do I have in this look? 1) A matte complexion 2) Warm eyeshadow colours (yellow, orange, brown) 3) Matte red lips 4) Full, strong brows 5) Contoured cheeks

1) Ok, it's fall time, so time to put away your JLo Glow, and put on your matte face! Well, technically makeup shouldn't have any rules, and you can go do your glow if that's your thang I guess.
But, I'm just telling you this year's trends ... So I put away my Nars Sheer Glow foundation, and took out my Nars Sheer MATTE foundation instead

Sorry for my oily forehead, it seems to have unfortunately taken away from the matte affect, forgive me.

2) So carrying on, I combined eyeshadows from Mac in Gesso (yellow), Makeup Forever no.18 (orange), and Urban Decay from Naked palette 2 (brown). And surprise surprise, yess, they are all MATTE finishes as well!! I used the yellow and orange all over my eyelid, these colours were pretty much chosen to resemble the fall leaves falling off our trees. (surprise surprise) I used the brown all over my top lid and crease to create that more wide eyed look.

3) For my lips, I'm using Stila's liquid lipstick in #10, aka Beso. This is one of the best and long lasting lipsticks that actually stay without staining and is a pain in an ass to remove. Nope, once it becomes matte, it becomes kiss proof. Next time you drop by a Sephora or something, try putting it on, allow it 30 seconds to dry, and then kiss your hand. I guarantee nothing is going to transfer over. So I guess it's boyfriend friendly too. The only thing you have to make sure is to not get it wet, so I probably won't guarantee a happy ending if your kiss is too wet........ haha anyways moving on...

4) As usual, for my eyebrows, I'm using Anastasia's brow wiz twistable pencil in Ash Brown to fill in and shape my brows. To set, I used the tinted brow gel in Brunette just to keep all my eyebrows in place, and so the colour does not get wiped off so easily. Using that mascara wand in the brow gel will also help to groom and comb down the fine hairs.

5) Lastly, on the contour of my cheeks, I used my favourite go to bronzer that I use all year long. It is the Nars bronzer in Laguna. It generally is matte, but it has a few signs of sparkles if you play with it on the back of your hand. But once it's applied on to your face, you really don't see it anymore.

This is my current everyday look for the fall, of course once in a while i'll be lazy and just use neutral browns on my eyes, or darker berry colours instead of bright reds on my lips.
I hope you guys enjoyed this simple look.
Stay tuned next week, I'll be doing a look inspired by Kpop star Ji Eun from Secret for her new solo music video.

Let me know how you liked it, and what other looks you want to see!
Now enjoy these pictures of my cute puppy~

New hair & updates (braid obsession, Cle De Peau)

Interviews, projects, work, I need a day of break!! Well, I finally do get one next Sunday, I'm totally looking forward to that next week... but as usual on my days off, I'll literally just sleep in, do nothing, pig out on my bed, and sleep early. Honestly, that's what a comfortable day off sounds to me right now..because I have too little energy to do anything else anyways.

Last week, I kind of got a day off I guess, I had the whole morning off, until later in the afternoon when I got called in to work because of a big launch (that didn't even turn out to be as much of a hype as the company thought it would be). So I took advantage of the day off and went to get my roots touched up finally, my hair re-toned, and went for a nice walk in Yaletown.
As usual, I went back to Muse Hair Salon located on Cambie Street between 14th and 15th, returning to my trusty hair stylist Sally. Blondes are usually super hard to maintain, and dye evenly, but she does a great job every time! This time, we did a bit of a more darker ash brown as well, but it usually does fade into a lighter ash blonde by 2-3 weeks of wash. After a relaxing day at the salon, she finished off my pampered salon trip with beautiful beachy waves, and waterfall braids. Oh I'm still killing myself learning how to do those cute braids! And yes, they are also a current obsession for me... french braids, fishtail braids, and now these waterfall braids.

How can we not end a hot summer day without beers at the patio? That's obviously what I did before we headed down to the gorgeous summer seawalk at Yaletown Roundhouse. Summer feels to short...we literally have less than a month left.. I wouldn't say I wasted it, but I spent way too much indoors doing homework, going to school, and working. Next year, I can see myself working my way to the top, doing a full time job, and still moving up like I always push myself to do!

Oooh, as you can see, I did a fishtail braid today (continuing with my current obsession), and even when I'm just standing/sitting there doing nothing, my fingers just automatically start braiding. That's how much I've been doing it... but still sucking, there are days where I take an hour trying to figure out how to do a braid, and just unraveling it in frustration and putting my hair in a high ponytail. This is a picture of my little camwhore session before leaving for work. Today was a hot sunny day, of course it would call for a cute fishtail braid and a boho chic top from zara! Yes.. ignore my little sister at the back, she just likes getting into my photos all the time, at least this time it wasn't with her feet up or something crazy haha!

Here's just a quick snapshot of today's makeup. As you can see I look a lot lighter than my usual days..and that is due to me trying some new products. I decided to try some Cle De Peau products, which to my surprise brighten your skin more than anything I've ever seen! You know them Asians and liking their complexion to be super light.. and being a CBC, I'm totally not used to that. I'm usually more into that tanned sun kissed glow. But I like experimenting.. so I thought I'd try. It literally was just the makeup base that made me this white, because I only put a thin layer of powder over it, which looked darker than it really turned out to be. As you can see I tried to bronze the crap out of my skin to make myself not so ghostly...Well, at least it made my skin super smooth and healthy.
Cle De Peau sounds like a really luxurious brand, and  I'm looking forward to trying some of their other stuff, so please look forward to seeing some of their product reviews from me!

Thanks for reading, it's time for me to get to work!

Completed photoshoot - pinup and super hero inspired!

Hey guys!

Remember couple weeks ago, I blogged about my styling project that was inspired by pinup girls, superheroes and all that jazz? Well, I finally received my pictures, completed my project, so sorry I wasn't able to upload the pictures until now. It was super fun to do the photoshoot, and it was absolutely a pleasure to work will everyone, whether it be the model, photographer or the makeup artist. Everything ran smoothly, and we were able to finish an hour early than the predicted time which was awesome! The people that I worked with will be credited at the end so stay tuned (:

Pinup inspired:

This is the photo that I chose for the final look and put on my project. I did adjust the photo a little bit, because she was kind of leaning against her arm a bit, so I got my friend to help me edit the photo to bring in the sides a little bit. The top that I used for these series of photos were actually from a vintage store downtown, and I was super lucky to be able to find it. It was so hard being able to find a corset that was the very classy kind of look I wanted. I kept finding ones that were either super trashy or costed like $300, which I wasn't able to dish out at all. And a corset being a lingerie piece, I believe it was non refundable.
But since the one I got was vintage, I still had to keep it, but $40 was nothing, so I won't complain. For the bottom, I chose for her to wear a sheer chiffon skirt that was higher cut on the front and longer at the back. The shape of it made her legs look even skinnier than they already were and elongated them as much as the heels did.

The day before the shoot, I was absolutely stressing out, and super terrified because I had no idea what to expect. But the moment my model sat on the floor and started shooting, I could feel a sigh of relief, because my model already absolutely knew what she was doing with the reference pictures that I had given her. The photographer was also very helpful with helping to adjust her poses and took beautiful pictures from different angles and using different props for effects.

Next, this is the super hero inspired:

Here is the final photo that I used for the second look. It was just a super sleek, sexy and leather look. A super hero I would relate her to is someone like the Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff. They both kind of have this sexy but a powerful look to them, and that was exactly the kind of look that I was looking for. And I just decked her out with a bunch of Sexpot Revenge accessories to emphasize the look even more (courtesy of my best friend who was once super into punk).

Here is a focus picture on her makeup:

For her complexion, we just gave her a nice flawless face with a dewy finish. Using light contour on her cheeks and highlighted her cheekbones for that illuminated look. For her eyes, we did a bold crease cut using a champagne colour for the base, and a dark purple for the crease. We kept it a matte finish with no glitter or sparkles. To add even more drama to her eyes, we double stacked lashes. Finally for the lips, we used a powerful and bold red to define her beautiful full lips.

The first and second looks were both the same makeup, except the second look we adjusted the eye makeup a little by adding the halodium powder by Makeup Forever to add the extra glamour to her look.

The photoshoot was absolutely successful, I was super happy with the results, thank you so much for everyone who helped out, it wouldn't have been possible at all without you guys! You have no idea how relieved I am to have finished it. Now I got this huge project off my chest, and I can work my butt off for the rest of the remaining semester. Just two more semesters to go! I can do it!

My lesson learned from this shoot is that even though it's something that you've never done before but it's something you love, just be confident and do your best. Even if it doesn't work out the first time, it will in the end. So just keep trying and trying and trying! Through all the struggles I went through not being able to find a location to shoot, not finding the clothes I needed, i had a beautiful photoshoot that was completed. So remember, when there is a problem, stay calm to resolve it, because when you're frantic, you'll never be able to think of something when your head is a mess. So good luck to everyone with everything you do! Stay positive!

Thanks for reading everyone!

Oh yes, I didn't forget, all the people I worked with are Vancouver based, just in case you were wondering.
